My New Zealand Story

Being a dual American and Bermudian citizen, and growing up in Bermuda, I have always been inherently fascinated by the ways people from varying backgrounds interact and cooperate. After living in the U.S. for a few years for my degree, I have become especially interested in countries like my home, where a differing political affiliation doesn’t have to mean conflict, and where community is valued above all.

New Zealand is one of the most peaceful and environmentally sustainable nations in the world. As a Political Science and International Relations student, I am particularly excited to explore how this has been accomplished and how New Zealand’s policies could be replicated in other countries. I chose to study in Wellington not only because it is beautiful and reminiscent of home, but also because studying in the capital will provide me the opportunity to experience New Zealand politics at its heart: policies, the intersection of cultures, and the careers of trailblazing politicians such as Jacinda Ardern and Julie Anne Genter.

Studying abroad in an entirely new hemisphere will be challenging, but positively so, helping me to hone my career goals, become more independent and confident in myself. The past few years of my life have been an emotional rollercoaster. I grew up relatively financially comfortable in Bermuda, however, over the years my father’s alcoholism and mental health worsened, my parent’s divorced and several years of court struggles regarding consistent child support ensued. When I began college in 2016, my mother and I moved to the U.S. so that I could afford to attend. In August 2017, my father passed, and in the following months my mother began facing severe health issues in addition to her pre-existing conditions. Thus, our financial situation worsened, and it has become increasingly difficult to finance this experience.

One of my biggest fears in life is becoming stagnant and generally complacent. I am still dealing with the emotional aftermath of my father’s mental health decline and abusive behavior along with new financial struggles; forcing me to remain veritably frozen for several years. However, I am beginning to move past these issues to achieve my full potential in life, opting to pursue my major, despite the challenges I face in meeting the study abroad requirement.

This scholarship opportunity means a great deal to me, as it could be the difference between studying abroad and gaining these experiences or remaining stagnant. I am incredibly passionate about photography and videography. I regularly photograph and film the world as it catches my eye; nature, family, and quirky artwork, for posterity (a hobby picked up from a childhood with a mother who is an avid photographer). I love learning, exploring, growing as a person and encouraging others to grow. I may not have a perfectly curated Instagram feed, but I do believe that I have the necessary skills, talent and passion to be a great Kiwi Ambassador, should I be lucky enough to be given the chance.
